If the cavity progresses to its final stage or the infection is present within or
below the tooth, endodontic therapy - commonly referred to as a root canal - is
performed to prevent future infection. To cure the infection and save the tooth,
the infected pulp containing nerves and blood vessels is removed with a long needle-shaped
drill. After this is done, hollowed root canals and the chamber are filled with
inert material and the opening is sealed up. It is best to fit the treated tooth
with a crown for successful prognosis.
